Many years ago, somewhere around 1993-94, a welcome sign was erected at Rocky Peak which was made of heavy duty chain link fence and four inch steel pipe. The letters “Welcome to Simi Valley” were made of wood with fiberglass coatings and a huge Rotary International Wheel was placed there to show the sign was part of the Rotary Community Service emphasis. Mother nature, with her winds and rain and cold, couldn’t damage the sign but the rage of a wild fire did it in with little effort.
Rotary International was preparing to celebrate it’s 100th anniversary in 2005, its Centennial Anniversary, and all Rotary clubs around the world were asked to present a special gift to their communities showing their involvement in the community. The fire hastened the rebuilding of the Welcome sign. The City of Simi Valley was willing to participate in the construction of a significant monument sign to welcome neighbors, guests and businesses to our fair town. Together the three Rotary Clubs in Simi Valley and the City of Simi Valley collaborated to design, construct and finally dedicate this beautiful sign on July 11, 2007.
We hope you enjoy the sign every time you enter the valley. Be it day or night, the sign, the flags and the seals of Rotary and the City of Simi Valley will greet you with a warmth we hope will continue as you travel through and in our city.
